My Own Explanation on How to Get Twin Pregnancy

An interesting topic I guess. My wife and I received a lot of questions from friends and other people on how to get a twin pregnancy. Before I proceed on the explanation I think it’s wise for me to brief you on the fact of twin pregnancy.

I believe one of the reasons why twin pregnancy trend is on the rise is because many women today are delaying the process to get pregnant into their 30s and beyond. I remember reading this one article sometime ago saying that when women get older, the hormonal changes may cause more than one egg to be released at a time which boosts the odds of conceiving non-identical (fraternal) twins.

Fraternal twins - are the most common kind of twin pregnancy. It occurs when two separate eggs are fertilized by two different sperms (two eggs + two sperms… hmmm). Each twin can have his or her own placenta (Uri we called it in Malay) and amniotic sac (thin layer separating both twins). Result may vary – two girls, two boys, or a boy and a girl.

Identical twins (like my twin babies Tasha & Tina) however occur when a single fertilized eggs splits and develops into two fetuses. They may share placenta but separated by amniotic sac.

Since my wife is still young during her twin pregnancy (on her 20s), I believe this has to do with a genetic factor which runs in her family at her great grandmother side.

Another interesting method to get twin pregnancy beside a genetically factor and late conceiving, is by applying another method called IVF or In-Vitro Fertilization or “Bayi Tabung Uji” in Malay. Although by having this method women can increase their chances to conceive with twin pregnancy for more than 60%, however, the method is advisable to women age 36 and above and to women who have difficulty in getting pregnant.
